I don’t really have an anniversary. I’m not one of those people who remembers every special occasion and what was worn and where it took place. Colin and I became friends fifteen years ago. We dated a couple of times here and there. Things got serious sometime in 2005.
That was ten years ago. Ten years! Most relationships last fewer than three years according to recent studies. But I don’t want to imagine not having him around.
I wouldn’t dare have asked someone to take on the challenge that my life was to become in the years since. My children aren’t the easiest kids to raise, and our lives have included a great deal of difficulty due to David’s disability (not to mention my own). But, even though it wasn’t required of him, Colin gradually stepped in and became dad to my kids (and our fur babies), my best friend and greatest love, an excellent chef (we had mahi mahi and asparagus last night versus the hotdogs and cheetos we lived on a decade ago), a bringer of laughter, the world’s greatest trivia partner, and so much more.
He’s more than I deserve, though he’d argue that deserve is a term best reserved for philosophical conversation. But deserve or not, he’s the greatest, and I’m glad that he’s there at the end of the day. I don’t have to put on appearances for Facebook to make it seem like we have some amazing relationship that isn’t real. We really do spend our free time together sharing laughter and love.
Rupaul said to his good friend Henry Rollins, “One of the greatest, most courageous things I’ve ever done was to let someone into my life. It’s the scariest fucking thing in the world… Mistakes are going to be made whether you’re with someone or you’re not.” May as well share it all. It’s totally worth it. Why go it alone when you can go it along with someone who rocks.
I adore you, colinnsick. Thanks for picking me to be your un-girlfriend.
